May saw the Sunday Times release its annual Giving List for 2021, where those in the UK are ranked depending on their ‘Giving Index’. This index is calculated by dividing the total sum of an individual or group of individuals by their total wealth, giving a percentage figure.

But who exactly are these generous givers who come from all aspects of society? How did they earn their riches? And what forms of charity are they most interested in? Below, Silver Linings News devotes a separate article to take a look at each of those who made it into the top 20 of the list:

11) Tony Travis

Despite a net worth less than 5% the value of Alan Parker, Tony Travis has pipped Parker to 11th place in The Sunday Times Giving List 2021. Parker’s £120m net worth and £10m in recent donations have resulted in a Giving Index of 8.36%.

Together with his family, the publication revealed that Travis’ key areas of philanthropy centred around community, medical, health, environmental, and arts donations.

Despite Travis’ recent donations reaching the lowest total of all those within the top 20 of the list, by donating over eight pence to every pound of net worth, Travis and his family almost reached the top 10 of the publication’s giving list.

Tony Travis made his riches by taking over the family construction company, Travis and Arnold. Following the merger of the business with Sandall Perkins in 1988, Tony Travis was appointed chairman and CEO at the combined Travis Perkins.
