A family venture in County Dublin, led by entrepreneur Thomas Barry, 34, has recently moved to a bigger site to accommodate greater global interest.

Thomp2 Socks was established as a sock manufacturer by Thomas Barry in May 2019. What makes this company stand out from other clothing companies is the importance of raising money and awareness for important causes, something integral to the project right from the start.

In the inaugural two years of this endeavour, Thomp2 has raised funds for St. John of Gods Hospital in Dublin, an organisation close to Thomas Barry’s heart. Five per cent of all profits made by the organisation are sent to the local hospital which has, according to his father Finbar, “cared for Thomas for many years,” and helped him navigate “Down’s Syndrome, Perthes Disease, Hirschsprung Disease, Heart Murmur, Under-active Thyroid, Hiatus Hernia and stomach Re-flux.”

In September 2020, a new pair of socks was created by the company alongside a powerful video to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. From every purchase of these ‘Mental Health Awareness Socks’, it was revealed that €2 would go towards Irish charitable organisation Pieta House, who do vital work with those experiencing suicidal feelings.

The socks became a hit throughout Ireland, with fits and styles for all age groups, genders, shapes, sizes and desires. They have even adorned the feet of those in high office. Former Taoiseach and colourful sock enthusiast Leo Varadkar was pictured looking rather smug in a pair of red pug socks that he had received from Thomp2. No wonder Varadkar looked so chuffed, I could not find that pair anywhere on the website!

Barry is not only responsible for raising money for charity, then, but his socks have likely been worn during crunch negotiations, debates and decision-making in Leinster House.

The success that Thomp2 has experienced has been attributed largely to the innovative designs from Thomas and his team. The unique nature of the styles of socks is mirrored by the distinctive logo which takes inspiration from the entrepreneur’s creative signature.

Sock-lovers have also been impressed with the ‘Sockscription’ feature available on the official website, as one can sign up for a pair of random socks, though with a personal touch in the option of ‘Subtle and Elegant’ or ‘Colourful and Fun’, to be delivered monthly.

After proving so popular close to home, these snazzy socks have followed in the footsteps of the Irish diaspora all over the globe. A move to bigger offices was prompted by sales worldwide, with Thomas’ nephew Shane Barry revealing popular destinations for orders being “Australia, Dubai, Canada, Norway, Finland, Germany and France to name but a few.”

Tallaght, a satellite town of capital city Dublin, has many celebrated sons and daughters, no more so than former Liverpool and Tottenham forward Robbie Keane. Whilst fellow Tallaght native and Republic of Ireland record goal scorer ‘Keano’ spread joy to others through his feet, similarly, businessman Thomas is spreading joy to the feet of others through his stylish socks.

With many happy customers the world over and valuable funds and exposure for charity, it is undeniable that Thomp2 are living up to their slogan of ‘Spreading Love Through Socks’.
